New bar cars to be built for Metro-North trains

STAMFORD, Conn. - The state of Connecticut plans to raise the bar for the next generation of commuter cars, and the bar car is no exception, according to a story in the Stamford Advocate. The state Department of Transportation confirmed it would not eliminate the popular and profitable beverage and snack vending car after a contractor is selected to build new cars for Metro-North Railroad's New York-New Haven Line later this year.

"When someone is taking a longer trip, we want to be offering them the highest levels of amenities possible," DOT spokesman Chris Cooper said. "We viewed a possible elimination of the cars as a reduction in service, and we didn't want to do that."

DOT provided few details on bar car design because a contractor has not been selected to build the fleet. But plans for an unknown number of "C" cars - which provide cafe service - were included in the bid specifications. The new cars are expected to be delivered by the end of 2008.

The New Haven Line is among the last few commuter lines in the country offering a designated car on evening rush-hour trains that serve an assortment of beers, mixed drinks, soft drinks, chips and other snacks.

Though Metro-North officials say bar cars generated nearly $5 million in revenue last year and $658,000 in profit, other operations, including Metro-North's Hudson and Harlem line counterparts in New York, have phased out the service because the car's spacious bar setup took seats away from commuters.
